Maha Visnu Das- North Shore Community Kirtan

What is Kirtan?
Kirtan is transcendental spiritual music and a meditation practice also described as Bhakti Yoga or Nada Yoga. Its origins come from Eastern Indian and Budhist culture. In its tradition, Kirtan is recited as a call and response chanting from the vocal leader to the audience, who then recites or echos back the same lyrics. By chanting in this way, the sounds and voices raise a very high conscious vibration that reverberates within and outside of you, opening up energy channels. This practice calms and quiets the mind. You don't need to have any previous experience to attend a Kirtan. All spiritual faiths are welcome.

Maha Visnu, disciple of the late Bhakti Tirtha Swami Maharaja (1950-2005), and author of Bhakti Yoga Sutras, lived and grew up in India from the age of 10 where he attended a traditional Vedic Gurukula school for the following 15 years. In addition to secular studies, he learned to read and write Sanskrit, became fluent in the local language and completed in-depth studies and courses in Vedic philosophy, Yoga-siddhanta, and Bhakti Kirtan; mastering the Mrdanga (a traditional clay drum used in Eastern India).

Maha Visnu received diksa initiation at the age of 17 and went on to be ordained as a Hindu priest in the Bhakti lineage of the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya Sampradaya. He was, at the time, one of the youngest African-americans, in the world, ever to have qualified for such ordination. He then went on to earn the title of Mahashay, "teacher of vedic philosophy", another first for an African-american, and began teaching Vedic philosophy throughout India. He later returned to teach in the same Gurukula in which he was raised, even briefly serving for a time as its Interim Head Master.

In 2000 Maha Visnu moved to Norway and taught Bhakti Yoga to spiritualists in Scandinavia. Upon his return to the United States in 2002 He served Massachusetts’ first and oldest Hindu temple in various capacities from Head Priest, to Vice President and President.

In 2015 Maha Visnu opened his own Radha Krishna Mandir in Everett, Massachusetts. He later relocated the Mandir to Worcester and finally Northboro, Ma. where he realized his long cherished dream of opening his own Gurukula.

In 2019 he and his wife turned the Mandir over to others so they could focus full time on their Gurukula. In addition to running and teaching in his Gurukula, Maha Visnu now travels New England sharing Kirtan and conducting courses in Bhakti Yoga.
